Oversized dresses usually go wrong in the same four places on a fuller body. The volume starts at the shoulder, so the fabric falls straight from the bust and the widest part of the dress lands on the widest part of you. The sleeve is set into a shallow armhole that grips the upper arm, and it binds the moment you reach forward or drive. The neckline sits tight and high at the base of a full neck, so everything above the bust reads as one solid block. And the fabric is often a thin, slightly clingy weave that finds your stomach by mid-afternoon and stays there.

The Susana Floral Dress is cut to move the volume off the top half. Two inverted pleats release from upper-hip level, so the bodice stays close to the shoulder line and the width only opens up below the hip — the fullest part of the dress sits away from your body rather than on it. The shoulder seam is dropped onto the upper arm instead of set into the armhole, and the short sleeve is cut wide and straight to just above the elbow, so it hangs off the arm rather than gripping it and nothing pulls when you reach. The round neck is finished with a narrow bound edge and no placket, so there is no button line to gape. The stripe runs unbroken from shoulder to hem with no horizontal break anywhere on the dress, and the cloth is a dry, matte woven fabric rather than a soft, clingy stretch, so it hangs away from the body instead of following it.

Why it works

• Inverted pleats from the upper hip: the volume is released below the hip, so the dress does not add width across the bust and midsection.
• Dropped shoulder seam: the seam falls on the upper arm instead of at the armhole, which is what stops the binding when you lift your arm.
• Wide short sleeve, straight cut to above the elbow: it hangs off the upper arm rather than closing around it, so there is no band pressing into the widest point.
• Unbroken vertical stripe: the stripe runs shoulder to hem with no horizontal seam band cutting across the body.
• Dry matte weave, not a clingy stretch: the cloth holds its own shape and hangs clear of the stomach instead of clinging to it.
• Side-seam pockets: set into the seam rather than patched on, so they sit flat and do not gape open at the hip.

Fit note

This one is deliberately oversized — the width is built into the cut, not into the sizing, so take your usual size rather than sizing down to find the shape. There is no waist seam and no belt, so the dress hangs from the shoulder; if you want definition, a belt worn over the top at your natural waist is the way to get it, though it will fight the pleats a little. The cocoon shape curves out at the hip and comes back in towards the hem, which means the skirt does not sweep or catch on doorways, and the hem sits at mid-calf. The weave is matte and dry rather than slippery and shiny, so it creases the way a woven summer fabric does and shakes out again on the hanger. Sizes M to 4XL.
