The seam sits at the hip, not the waist — so it never has to find the narrowest part of you.

A dress joined at the natural waist has to land on one specific line of your body to look the way it did on the model, and on a fuller torso that line sits higher than the pattern assumes. The bodice comes up short, the seam rides up under the bust, and the skirt starts from somewhere it wasn't meant to. Pockets are the next thing to go. A side pocket needs cloth around it: set into a narrow skirt there is nothing for the pocket bag to sit against, so it stands away from the side seam and the opening gapes whether your hands are in it or not. And a straight three-quarter sleeve tapers as it goes down; graded up, it keeps the narrow taper it was drafted with, so it ends up gripping at the elbow exactly where the arm needs room to bend.

Sloane moves the problem out of the way. The joining line is dropped to the hip — well below the waist — and the skirt is gathered onto it, so every bit of the volume starts below the fullest part of the torso and the skirt swings from there instead of pulling. The pockets sit in the side seams of that full skirt, with enough cloth around them to hang flat. The sleeves are cut straight and open to a wide cuff below the elbow, with no elastic anywhere to catch as the arm bends. And the artwork is composed for the dress rather than tiled across it: the lotus medallion is drawn onto the bodice, the scrolling vines fill the skirt, and the border bands run along the shoulder line and the hem — the two edges that don't shift with body shape.

• Joining seam dropped to the hip: it never has to land on your natural waist, so sizing for the bust doesn't leave the bodice short.
• Skirt gathered onto the hip line: all the width starts below the fullest part of the body, so the skirt moves instead of pulling across it.
• Pockets in the side seams of a full skirt: enough cloth around them that the bag hangs flat rather than standing away.
• Straight sleeve, open cuff below the elbow: no elastic and no taper at the joint, so nothing grips when you bend your arm.
• Placed artwork, not a tiled repeat: the medallion belongs to the bodice and the borders run along the shoulder and the hem.
• Matte woven with some body: it holds the shape of the gathers rather than collapsing back onto the hip.

Fit note

Easy through the shoulders and chest, full from the hip down — take your usual size. This is one of the heavier, more opaque fabrics in the range, so nothing shows through and the skirt keeps its shape as you walk. There is no zip or button at the back; it goes on over the head. The skirt has real width to it, so expect it to move rather than hang still. Sizes M to 4XL.
