The sleeve carries on past the elbow, and the walking room doesn't shrink as the sizes go up.

A short sleeve ends at the widest part of the upper arm, and the hem of a sleeve is the tightest circle in it — so the one place the sleeve grips is the one place the arm is broadest. Pushing it up makes it worse, because now the tight edge is somewhere even fuller. The hem has a subtler problem. A skirt needs to be wider than your hip by a fixed amount, not a proportional one, to take a normal stride; when extra width is only added at the side seams, the hem grows by exactly the same amount as the hip does, so the walking room you had at M has quietly disappeared by 3XL. And a gathered seam placed at the hip is the worst possible height for it: the gathers add bulk starting at the fullest part of the body and the skirt has to fall away from there.

Penelope is cut around those three. The sleeves are three-quarter — they pass the elbow and finish on the forearm, which is narrower than the upper arm, so the tight edge of the sleeve lands somewhere it can sit comfortably. The skirt's fullness comes from a gathered tier rather than from the side seams, which adds a fixed amount of extra circumference on top of whatever the body needs — the same stride at every size. And that tier is set low, well below the hip, so the gathers start where the skirt has already fallen clear rather than at your widest point. The print is a true ikat with feathered, bleeding edges, so nothing has to line up across a seam anywhere.

Why it works

• Three-quarter sleeves: the sleeve finishes on the forearm rather than at the widest part of the upper arm.
• Fullness from a gathered tier, not the side seams: the extra walking room is a fixed amount, so it doesn't shrink as the sizes go up.
• Tier set low, below the hip: the gathers start after the skirt has fallen clear, not at the fullest part of the body.

• Two cord ties at the V: knot them to set how deep the neckline sits and it holds there.
• No waist seam: nothing has to find your natural waist, so sizing for the bust doesn't misplace a seam.

Fit note

Loose through the body with no fastenings — it pulls on over the head, so take your usual size. This one sits shorter than the ankle-length dresses in the collection: the hem falls around the calf, a little lower at the back. The weave is fine and lets some light through in strong sun; a slip underneath if you would rather it didn't. An ikat is printed to look hand-dyed, so the edges are soft and slightly irregular on purpose. Sizes M to 4XL.
