The width arrives below the hip, not at the shoulder.

Most long loose dresses get their room the lazy way: the whole garment is cut wider from the shoulder down. The fabric then hangs outward from the bust and never touches the body again, which is the shape people mean when they say a dress looks like a tent — and it's a construction decision, not anything to do with the person wearing it. Prints have their own version of the same shortcut. When artwork is stretched to cover a bigger garment instead of being kept at the size it was drawn, the motifs grow with the panel: the same style reads fine and detailed at M and coarse and blown-up at 4XL, so two people buying the same dress don't get the same dress. And a V held shut by a cord sewn partway down the opening leaves the top of the split — where the strain actually is — with nothing holding it.

Ottoline is put together the other way. The upper body follows the shoulder line and stays there; all the width enters at a gathered tier low on the skirt, so the volume starts below the hip and the skirt swings from there. The ikat is kept at its drawn scale, so the diamonds are the same size on a 4XL as on an M — and because the print is a true ikat with feathered, bleeding edges, nothing has to line up across a seam either. The two cord ties are anchored at the very top of the split, so the knot you tie holds the neckline at the depth you set it to.

Why it works

• Width enters at a low gathered tier: the upper body keeps the shoulder line and the volume starts below the hip.
• Print kept at its drawn scale: the pattern is the same size on every size, so you get the same dress rather than a blown-up version of it.
• Feathered ikat edges: nothing has to line up across a seam, because there's no hard outline to break.
• Ties anchored at the top of the V: the knot holds the opening where the strain is, not halfway down it.
• Frilled cuff above the elbow: gathered into the fabric instead of a tight band, so it gives on a fuller arm.
• No waist seam, ankle-length skirt: nothing has to find your natural waist, and the hem starts low enough to stay long.

Fit note

Loose through the body with no fastenings — it pulls on over the head, so take your usual size. The weave is fine and matte and lets some light through in strong sun, most noticeably across the skirt; a slip underneath if you would rather it didn't. Knot the ties higher for a shallower neckline or lower to open it up. An ikat is printed to look hand-dyed, so the edges are soft and slightly irregular on purpose — that's the print rather than a fault. Sizes M to 4XL.
