Michell | Floral Summer Dress

One bold graphic, placed on the part of the dress that can actually carry it.

Colour-blocked dresses have a specific problem on a fuller body: the block seam is a hard horizontal line, and on most versions it lands somewhere across the stomach — exactly where the cloth is already under the most tension, so the line breaks and draws the eye straight to it. Big single-placement graphics have a second problem. They are usually drawn once and stretched to fit every size, so on a wider panel the motif spreads sideways and the linework goes thin and washed out. And a black-over-white block adds a third: white cloth goes see-through in bright sun long before black cloth does, so the skirt half can let you down while the top half is fine.

The Michell Floral Summer Dress puts its block seam under the bust, above the stomach entirely, so the horizontal line sits on the narrowest part of the torso and the whole skirt below it is one uninterrupted field. The octopus is drawn to run downwards from that seam: the tentacles fall and taper towards the hem, so the linework reads vertically rather than spreading sideways across the width. The suckers keep their outlines at full size because the artwork is placed rather than repeated, and the black bodice and white skirt are the same dry, matte, fully opaque weave — neither panel shows through. Below the yoke seam two inverted box pleats release the body of the dress outwards into a wide cocoon that stays off the stomach and hips.

Why it works

• Block seam under the bust: the hard horizontal line sits on the narrowest part of the torso, not across the stomach where the cloth is under tension.
• Downward-running tentacle artwork: the lines fall and taper towards the hem, so the graphic reads as vertical movement rather than width.
• Wide set-in sleeve ending above the elbow: stops clear of the fullest part of the upper arm, so there is no gripping band and no pull lines across the solid black bodice.
• Two inverted box pleats below the yoke: release the body of the dress outwards in one go, so it stands away from the stomach instead of resting on it.
• Same dry, matte, opaque weave in both panels: the white skirt behaves like the black bodice in bright light — nothing shows through.
• Cocoon skirt with a rounded hem: widest at the hip and curving back in below the calf, so the skirt hangs straight and does not swing back as you walk.

Fit note

Cut oversized on purpose — size for your shoulder and bust and let the rest be roomy. Sizing up mainly widens the shoulder and drops the block seam lower than it is meant to sit, which is the one thing worth getting right on this dress. The weave is dry and creases softly; on the white skirt those fold lines are visible for the first hour and then drop out. The black bodice is a true flat black, so it pairs cleanly with a black flat sandal if you want the graphic to be the only thing happening. Sizes M to 4XL.
