An oversized summer dress usually gets its room the laziest way possible: the whole thing is cut wide from shoulder to hem, so the fullest part of you sets the width of the entire garment and everything above and below it hangs in the same straight line. Then there is the sleeve. On a pattern graded up from a small base, the armhole and the sleeve opening grow far more slowly than an upper arm does, so a short sleeve that should skim ends up gripping — you feel the band by mid-morning and there is a mark when you take it off. And placement: a bold print laid across the chest sits on the fullest, most curved part of the garment, where the fabric has to stretch furthest, so the motif pulls out of shape exactly where everyone looks first.

The Mattie Summer Floral Dress builds its volume from one place rather than everywhere. A horizontal yoke seam sits just under the bust, and two deep inverted pleats release from that seam — the width arrives below the yoke and falls away from the body instead of being cut into the shoulders and chest. The room starts where you want room. The sleeve is cut short and wide, finishing mid-upper-arm with a plain turned hem rather than a fitted band, so it hangs off the arm instead of closing around it. And the print is placed low: the red daisies climb from the hem up the left side of the skirt, with a single small bloom on each sleeve, leaving the bodice plain — the motif sits on the flattest, most stable part of the cloth, where it stays the shape it was printed.

The shoulder is where the fit is set; if you are between sizes, choose by shoulder and chest, because the rest of the dress is not holding on to you anyway. The cloth is dry and matte rather than slippery, so it settles as the day goes on and holds a soft crease at the pleats — shake it out and it drops back. The hem sits at mid-calf.
