Margot | Chic V-Neck Blouse

A neckline that stays exactly where you put it.

Most blouses are graded up from a size 8 block, and a V-neck is the detail that suffers most for it. The depth of the V is measured down from the shoulder seam, so on a fuller bust — where there is simply more distance between shoulder and bust point — that same V drops several centimetres further and lands somewhere you did not choose. Buttons make it worse: the gap between two buttons always opens at the widest point of the chest, which is why so many blouses end up worn over a camisole. Short sleeves are the second problem. Cut to finish on a size 8 upper arm, they land on the widest part of yours and grip there, leaving a ring above and a ring below. And a straight hem drafted for a straight body stops at the fullest part of the hip and clings — which is where "every blouse turns into a crop top" comes from: there was never enough length below the bust to begin with, so it rides up.

The Margot avoids all of that by not being a button-front shirt at all. The V is a sewn split with a flat facing band down each side and a gold metal bar across the top of the opening, so its depth is fixed by construction — there is no fastening to pull apart and nothing to gape between. The stand-up notched collar keeps the top of the split standing instead of folding open. The short sleeve is cut wide and finished with a single turned-back cuff that rests loose on the arm, so the widest part of your arm sits inside the sleeve rather than at its edge. The body is straight and slightly boxy with room through the hip and real length below the bust, and the hem falls past the fullest point with small side splits so it hangs rather than grips.

Why it works

• Sewn V split, no buttons: the opening cannot gape, because there is no fastening to gape between.
• Gold bar across the top of the V: holds the collar opening at one fixed width all day instead of letting it fall further open as you move.
• Stand-up notched collar: gives the neckline a structured edge, so the V keeps its shape when you lean forward.
• Wide short sleeve with a turned-back cuff: the cuff sits loose below the widest part of the upper arm, so nothing cuts in and there is no bulge above the hem.
• Straight body with length below the bust: the room needed over the bust is not taken out of the hem, so the blouse stays down instead of riding up.
• Small splits at the side hem: the hem can move over the hip instead of gripping it.

Fit note

Cut loose and fluid. Take your usual size for a relaxed fit; size up if you want more room across the bust or prefer a longer line. The cloth is soft and drapes rather than holding a shape, so it follows movement without clinging, and it creases lightly through the day and drops out again. The V sits at chest level, above the bra line, and stays there — it does not open further as you move. Wear it untucked over jeans or trousers; a front tuck shortens the line if you want more waist.
