A print this big usually never makes it past a size 16.

Two things go wrong with a printed summer dress once the size range runs past XL. The first is the print itself: large-scale florals get quietly shrunk for the bigger sizes, on the theory that a small busy repeat is somehow safer, so the same dress that reads as bold on the rail turns into a dense, fussy pattern by the time it reaches you. The second is the cloth. Loose summer dresses are often cut in the lightest fabric available to keep the drape, and a light fabric spread over more body goes translucent in daylight — something you tend to discover in a shop window's reflection rather than in the fitting room. And a straight-cut loose dress with no seam to release the fabric hangs from the bust in one flat sheet, so it catches between the thighs as you walk and has to be pulled forward every few steps.

The Magdalena Summer Floral Dress keeps the print at full scale — a single bloom spans most of the front panel, at the same size on every size in the range, so the M and the 4XL are recognisably the same dress rather than one being a reduced copy of the other. The cloth is a matte, opaque woven summer fabric with visible surface texture rather than a thin drape-y one; it carries its own weight and stays solid against strong light. And the shape is cut with a yoke seam under the bust with two deep inverted pleats releasing from it, which gives the skirt a rounded, self-supporting volume — the fabric stands away from the hips and thighs on its own instead of falling flat against them, so it does not catch as you walk.

Fit note

Cut generously through the body, so your usual size is normally the one to take. The width comes from the pleats below the yoke rather than from the whole dress being made bigger, which means the fit that actually matters is across the shoulders and bust — choose there if you are between sizes. The cloth is dry and matte; it creases where it folds and drops out again once it is on and warm. The hem sits at mid-calf on most people, a little lower if you are shorter. The print does the work here, so keep the rest quiet: flat sandals, and nothing that competes at the neck. Sizes M to 4XL.
