It is a warm Saturday morning, you step into this over a pair of sandals, pick up a basket and head out the door. The cloth is matte and a little crinkled, and it swings a step behind you the whole way down the street.

Nothing gaping across the chest

Buttons down the front of a dress usually pull open across the bust, because the bodice underneath is cut narrow and the placket is the only thing holding it together. This one is cut wide through the chest and hangs from the shoulder, so the front is never under strain to begin with. The rows of fine vertical tucks on either side of the buttons put extra width exactly where a fuller bust needs it. Reach up for the top shelf and the front stays where it was.

The gathers start above your stomach

On most shirt dresses the waist seam lands in the middle of your stomach, and that is exactly where all the gathered fabric is bunched up. Here the seam sits higher, just under the bust, and the skirt is released from that point. By the time the fabric reaches your stomach it is already falling free instead of stretching across it. You get a waist in the dress without anything pressing on your middle.

Room right through the arms

The sleeve is cut wide and the shoulder seam sits out on your arm instead of on the bone, so the fullest part of your upper arm has fabric around it rather than a seam against it. The turned-up cuff finishes above the elbow and stays there, so nothing creeps up when you are carrying a bag.

Pockets that stay out of the way

Two pockets are set into the side seams at hip height, deep enough for your phone and your keys. The skirt is full enough that putting your hands in does not drag the front of the dress out of line.

It goes on like a shirt

The buttons run from the collar down past the waist seam and on into the skirt, so you step into it and do it up rather than pulling it over your head and working it past your shoulders. It comes in sizes M to 4XL.
