Most flat shoes hold your foot with one strap and a row of fixed holes, and on a wider foot the last hole is the one that presses a line across the top. There is no strap here at all. The whole instep is covered by one piece of the napped upper, so what holds your foot is the width of the material rather than a band pulled to a setting. The little tie across the vamp is stitched on for show, not something you have to tighten.

The perforated panel gives where your foot is widest

The toe and the instep are punched through with hundreds of small holes, right across the part of your foot that measures the most. A panel full of holes gives a little as you walk instead of holding one fixed shape against you. That is the difference between a shoe you take off at lunchtime and one you forget you put on.

The stitching sits on the rim, not on your foot

The thick contrast whipstitch runs around the toe along the join with the sole, down at the very edge of the shoe. Nothing is seamed across the top of your foot, so there is no raised ridge sitting on the widest part of it.

Open at the back, so afternoon feet have somewhere to go

There is no heel counter and no back seam, so nothing is pressing behind your heel and your foot can settle backwards as the day goes on. You are never wedged between a hard back and a closed toe.

A sole that bends where your foot bends

The tan flexible sole is ribbed the whole way from toe to heel, so it folds with your step instead of staying flat like a board, and it sits low right along its length. It comes in EU 36 to EU 43.
