One big print, deliberately scattered — so nothing lands where you don't want it.

A bold oversized flower print is the fastest way to get a summer dress wrong on a fuller body, and it usually goes wrong for reasons that have nothing to do with taste. The pattern gets laid out on a small sample size and then simply cut bigger, so on a size 22 or 26 one enormous motif ends up centred on a breast or sitting flat on the stomach, and it becomes the only thing anyone sees. The cut is the second problem: a dress that takes its volume from a seam near the chest falls straight down from the bust, so it rests on the stomach all day rather than hanging clear of it. Third is the sleeve — a short sleeve set into a tight armhole stops at the widest point of the upper arm and grips there, and it pulls every time you reach or drive. And a hem that tapers too sharply on a cocoon shape shortens your stride, which you notice on stairs long before you notice it in a mirror.

The Lilia Summer Floral Dress handles the print by spacing it. The blossoms are large and flat-printed, but they are scattered wide apart with big areas of plain undecorated cloth between them, and they sit off-centre rather than aligned down the front — so no single flower becomes a target, and the plain ground does most of the work across the middle of the dress. The volume comes from two inverted pleats set at upper-hip level rather than at the chest, which means the bodice stays close to the shoulder line and the fabric only opens out below the hip, falling away from the stomach instead of onto it. The shoulder seam is dropped onto the upper arm and the short sleeve is cut wide and straight to above the elbow, so it hangs off the arm rather than closing around it. The cocoon line curves out through the hip and comes back in gently at mid-calf — gently enough that the hem stays wide, so walking is not a negotiation.

• Widely spaced, off-centre motifs: the flowers are scattered with plain cloth between them, so nothing sits centred on the bust or stomach.
• Pleats set at the upper hip, not the chest: the fabric falls clear of the middle instead of resting on it.
• Dropped shoulder seam: the seam lands on the upper arm rather than in the armhole, which is what stops the pulling when you reach.
• Wide straight sleeve to above the elbow: nothing grips the widest part of the arm.
• Gentle hem taper: the cocoon comes back in at mid-calf without narrowing enough to restrict your stride.
• Side-seam pockets: set into the seam, so they sit flat instead of gaping at the hip.

Fit note

The width here is in the cut, not the sizing, so take your usual size — sizing down mainly shortens the dress and pulls the pleats flat rather than giving you a closer fit. There is no waist seam, no belt and no elastic; the whole dress hangs from the shoulder, and if you want definition a belt at the natural waist will do it, at the cost of the pleats. The cloth is a dry, slubby, natural-coloured weave with a matte surface — it creases where you sit, in the way that kind of fabric does, and drops out again on the hanger.
