Leila | Summer Floral Dress

A print that gets bolder the further it gets from your middle.

Big painted florals usually let you down in a specific way on a fuller body. The print was designed and placed on a small sample size, then scaled up — so the busiest, brightest part of the pattern ends up sitting exactly across the bust and stomach, which is the one place most people did not want a focal point. Then there is the cut: a dress that releases its volume from a seam at the chest tents straight out from the fullest part of the bust, so it adds width where there already is width and starts reading as maternity by lunchtime. The sleeve is the third problem — a short sleeve set into a narrow armhole ends right at the widest point of the upper arm and grips there, and it pulls every time you reach across a table. And a high round neck with a small opening sits tight against a fuller neck and makes everything above the bust read as one block.

The Leila Summer Floral Dress is built the other way round. The print is graded rather than centred: the upper chest, shoulders and sleeves carry only a soft pale wash and a few small scattered blooms, and the flowers get denser and bolder as they travel down the skirt, so the loudest part of the pattern sits below the hip and the quiet part sits over the bust and midsection. The volume releases from inverted pleats at the upper chest and then falls away from the body in a rounded cocoon line, curving out past the hip and coming back in towards the hem — the fabric never sits against the stomach. The shoulder seam is dropped onto the upper arm rather than set into the armhole, and the sleeve is cut wide and straight to just above the elbow, so it hangs off the arm instead of closing around it. The round neck is finished with a narrow bound edge and no placket, so there is no button line to gape open.

Why it works

• Graded print placement: pale and quiet across the bust and midsection, boldest across the lower skirt, so the busiest part of the pattern is nowhere near your middle.
• Pleats released at the upper chest: the fabric falls clear of the bust and stomach instead of resting on them.
• Rounded cocoon line: curves out past the hip and tapers back in at the hem, so the dress reads as a shape rather than a straight tent.
• Dropped shoulder seam: the seam sits on the upper arm, not in the armhole, which is what stops the pulling when you reach forward.
• Wide straight sleeve to above the elbow: no band gripping the widest point of the upper arm.
• Side-seam pockets: set into the seam so they lie flat and do not gape at the hip.

Fit note

This is an oversized cut and the width is built into the pattern, not the sizing — take your usual size rather than sizing down to chase a closer fit, because sizing down mostly shortens the dress and pulls the pleats flat. There is no waist seam, no belt and no elastic anywhere, so it hangs entirely from the shoulder; a belt at your natural waist will give you definition if you want it, but it will flatten the pleats that make the shape. The hem sits at mid-calf and the skirt tapers slightly inward, so it does not sweep or catch. The cloth is a dry, matte summer weave rather than a slippery, shiny one, which means it creases where you sit and drops out again on the hanger. Sizes M to 4XL.
