No waist seam anywhere — the width comes from pleats that open as they fall.

A dress with no waist seam has to get its width from somewhere, and that is usually where it goes wrong. When all the fullness is gathered into the neckline, the fabric billows straight out from the collarbone and the widest line of the dress ends up across your shoulders. When there is too little flare instead, the opposite happens: the skirt catches on the hips, the front hem swings forward and rides up as you walk, and the hem is never level in a photograph or a mirror. Two more things go wrong at the edges. Short sleeves on a straight-size block come with a tight armhole, so on fuller upper arms the seam presses in and the sleeve creeps up into the armpit every time you lift your arm. And patch pockets stitched onto the outside of the skirt add a second layer of fabric right across the hip.

Georgina solves it with pleating rather than seaming. A cluster of soft pleats is set into a yoke high on the chest and then released — they stay closed across the shoulders and open gradually as they travel down, so the width appears below the shoulder line and keeps growing all the way to the hem. That gives the dress a steady A-line with enough sweep at the bottom to hang level and swing clear of the legs instead of catching on them. There is no waist seam at any height, so nothing has to sit against your middle. The neckline is a wide rounded scoop that sits away from the neck and collarbone, the short sleeves hang loose off the arm rather than gripping it, and both pockets are cut into the side seams so they lie flat.

• Pleats released from a chest yoke: the fullness starts below the shoulders, so the widest line of the dress is never across your shoulders.
• No waist seam at all: there is no fixed height that has to land in the right place on your torso.
• Wide sweep at the hem: enough fabric to hang level and move with you instead of catching on the hips and riding up.
• Wide scoop neckline: sits away from the neck and collarbone rather than pressing against them.
• Loose short sleeves: the sleeve hangs off the arm instead of gripping at the widest point, so it stays put when you raise your arm.
• In-seam side pockets: cut into the seams rather than stitched on top, so they add no extra layer across the hip.

Fit note

Nothing on this dress is fitted, so there is no measurement that has to be right. Take your usual size; if you are between two, take the smaller one — the pleats supply plenty of room and the larger size mostly adds length and width you won't use. The fabric is soft and light with a fluid drape, so it settles rather than standing away from you, and the pleats fall open as the day goes on rather than staying sharp. The hem sits well below the knee; on a taller frame expect it a little higher. Flat sandals suit the length; a low heel lifts the hem and lengthens the line.
