Wide where the pattern usually gives up, and still cut like a dress.

Most oversized dresses are drafted on a small block and then graded up, and the extra width lands where it is cheapest to add it: the hem. The bust, the shoulder and the upper arm barely move. So the skirt swings loose around your legs while the sleeve grips the widest part of your arm, and the moment you reach for something on a high shelf the whole dress travels up with your arm and settles higher than it started. The second thing that goes wrong is seam placement. When the fullness is released from a seam at the natural waist instead of under the bust, the volume begins below your stomach rather than above it, and the fabric pulls forward across the middle on its way down. And a side pocket cut into a straight side seam will sit open and gape at the hip once the body underneath is wider than the draft assumed.

The Elnora Floral Summer Dress is cut as a cocoon: the widest part of the pattern sits at the hip, so the fabric is already there before your body needs it. The yoke seam runs across the body just under the bust, well above the stomach, and the two soft inverted pleats release their fullness from the top of the torso downward, so the cloth falls past the middle instead of pressing across it. The sleeves are dolman, cut in one piece with the body rather than set into an armhole, so there is no seam sitting on the widest point of the upper arm to grip, and lifting your arm moves the sleeve rather than the whole dress. The pockets sit in the side seam inside that same width, so they hang within the silhouette rather than being pulled open by it.

• Cocoon cut, widest at the hip: the width is built into the pattern rather than borrowed from the hem, so the skirt clears the fullest part of you without gripping.
• Yoke seam under the bust: the fullness starts above the stomach and falls past it, instead of beginning below it and pulling forward.

Fit note

This one runs generous, and that is the shape rather than an accident of sizing. Take your usual size for the volume as drawn; go up one only if you want the hem to sit wider and lower on the calf. The fabric is dry and matte rather than fluid, which is what keeps the cocoon standing, and it creases the way a summer weave does: the folds soften through the day and drop out between wears. The hem sits at mid-calf and the taper is gentle enough to walk in without catching across the shin.
