A crossover that holds its place, and a skirt that starts above your stomach.

Crossover dresses fail on a fuller body in predictable ways. The overlap is the first: on a pattern cut for a smaller cup, the two panels cross at the point of the V instead of well past it, so the neckline sits open from the start and drifts wider every time you reach or lean over. When the crossover is held by a tie, it is worse — the knot slides through the belt loop as you move and the whole front loosens by lunchtime. The second is the waist seam. It sits at one fixed height on a straight-size block, and on a shorter or fuller torso that height lands below your natural waist, right across the broadest part of your middle, so the gathers start at the widest point and pile up there instead of falling. And large-scale prints stretch: over the bust and the stomach the motifs pull wide, so the same flower or dot appears in three different sizes across one dress.

Colette is cut against each of those. The crossover panels overlap deeply and meet in the waist seam rather than being tied, so there is no knot to loosen and the front keeps the position you put it in. The waist seam is set high, at the natural waist above the fullest part of the middle, and the skirt is gathered into it — the volume begins above your stomach and falls away from it in soft folds rather than gathering across it. The print is deliberately small and irregular: scattered off-white marks in mixed sizes and shapes on a dusty rose ground, so nothing needs to line up across a seam and no single motif is large enough to read as distorted wherever it lands. The elbow-length sleeves open out in a soft flare, so the sleeve widens where your arm is widest instead of gripping it.

Fit note

The waist seam is the only place this dress is meant to fit — everything above and below it is cut loose. Take your usual size and go one up if you are fuller through the bust, since the crossover is set at a fixed overlap and won't stretch to make room. The fabric is soft, matte and fluid; it drapes and swings rather than holding a shape, which also means it creases lightly if you sit for a long stretch and drops out again once you stand. The hem sits at mid-calf on a 170 cm frame; if you are taller it lands closer to the top of the calf. Flat sandals keep it casual, a heel lifts the hem clear of the ankle. Sizes M to 4XL.
