Wide through the body, and barely touching you anywhere in between.

Short-sleeved cocoon dresses go wrong on a fuller body in a few predictable ways. The sleeve is the first: it is cut straight and ends at the widest point of the upper arm, so the hem grips there, leaves a mark by lunchtime and rides up every time you reach for something. The second is the seam under the bust. On most versions it sits too high, so it lands on the fullest part of the bust instead of below it — the dress then hangs from your bust rather than from your shoulders, and the pleats that were meant to fall open stay pinned shut. The third is the hem. A cocoon shape is narrower at the hem than at the hip, and when that taper is cut too tight it catches on the calf, so the skirt swings backwards instead of dropping straight.

The Cathryn Summer Floral Dress is drafted around those three points. The sleeve is a wide, straight set-in sleeve that ends above the elbow, well clear of the fullest part of the arm, so nothing grips and nothing rides up. The yoke seam sits low, under the bust rather than on it, and the two deep inverted box pleats release from that seam — the fabric falls outwards from there and stops making contact with the body below it. The cocoon is cut wide enough through hip and thigh that the hem taper still clears the calf, so the skirt hangs straight. The cloth is a dry, matte, fully opaque weave that holds the balloon shape instead of collapsing onto you.

Why it works

• Set-in sleeve ending above the elbow: stops short of the widest part of the upper arm, so there is no band of pressure and no ride-up when you lift your arm.
• Yoke seam under the bust, not on it: the dress hangs from the shoulder line, so the weight of the skirt never rests on the bust.
• Two deep inverted box pleats: release a large amount of fabric in one go, so the body of the dress stands away from the stomach instead of draping onto it.
• Wide cocoon through hip and thigh: the hem taper clears the calf, so the skirt drops straight down rather than swinging back as you walk.
• Dry, matte, opaque weave: holds its own shape and shows nothing through, including in direct sun.
• Slanted pockets set into the side seam: your hands go in from the side, so using them does not pull the front panel out of shape.

Fit note

This one is cut deliberately oversized — it is meant to skim wide and touch almost nowhere. Take your usual size for shoulder and bust. Do not size up to get more room through the middle: the cocoon already has it, and a larger size mainly adds shoulder width, which is where the fit actually shows. The weave is dry and creases softly, so expect soft fold lines across the lap after a long sit; they drop out within the hour. If you want to break up the width, a flat sandal and a visible ankle does more than a belt, which fights the pleats. Sizes M to 4XL.
