A-line maxis look like the safe choice and then fail in one specific way. Most are graded up from a size 8 block, which adds a little width everywhere but keeps the flare starting at the waist seam — so the dress is still narrow exactly where you are widest, and the skirt has to be pulled across the hip before it can open out. On a fuller frame that drags the hem forward, and the front ends up sitting shorter than the back. Long sleeves are the second failure: drafted narrow above the elbow, they bite into the upper arm every time you bend it, which is why so many women give up on sleeves in summer and throw something over the top instead. And thin summer cloth clings the moment it warms up — a maxi that looked loose in the changing room is wrapped around your thighs by mid-afternoon.

The Bobbie starts its A-line at the shoulder. There is no waist seam anywhere: the cloth falls from the shoulder line and widens steadily all the way down, so the widest part of you never has to push past a fitted seam and the hem stays level front to back. The sleeves are cut long and full and roll to just below the elbow, held by a narrow tab, which puts the widest part of your arm in the widest part of the sleeve instead of at a cuff edge. The V split runs down to below the bust, so the neckline opens rather than strains, and the small scallop-edged stand collar keeps the top of it upright. The tone-on-tone embroidery — daisies and wandering stems worked in the same colour as the cloth — gives the surface a raised texture and a little body, which helps it hang away from the leg instead of following it.

Fit note

This is a genuinely loose dress with a very wide sweep, so take your usual size — sizing up mostly adds width at the shoulder, where you do not need it. It falls to the ankle on average height, which reads floor-length if you are petite and mid-ankle if you are tall. The cloth is light and dry and moves with the air, which is what you want in heat, but it is a summer weight: in the paler colours a slip underneath gives more cover in strong sun.
